ARTIST STATEMENT
In my paintings, I am interested in portraying people beyond the physical, displaying their abstract traits of morality and spirituality through the work. I like the setting and lighting to be as natural as possible. I want the people portrayed to be interacting with me and ultimately the viewer, so the poses are either a fixed gaze, or the body language is such that the viewer feels they are a part of this person’s life in that moment. My goal is to have people look at a painting of someone and connect with them emotionally through a pose that is simple and direct. I believe people hold personal values and varied interests, and I seek to explore these intangible traits in my paintings.
PROCEDURE
First Meeting: The painting begins with a meeting between me and the client, preferably at the location where the finished painting will be displayed. We will discuss thoughts and ideas for the painting. Topics of discussion include the size of the painting, subject matter, mood, lighting, and clothing. We will then determine the best method to complete the painted portrait (from live sittings, sketches, and/or photos), and an estimate date for the completion of the work.
Second Meeting: Within 2 weeks, I will produce a sketch of the portrait either from a live sitting, a photo, or a combination of both. The sketch will be reviewed by the client, and recommendations/changes will be noted. If the client is pleased with the sketch, a timeline will be established for the finished portrait. I request a 1/3 deposit payment at this time to secure the commission.
Painting the Portrait: Paintings completed from live sittings can be done either at the artist’s studio or the home of the client. Live sittings are typically 1-2 hours in length, 1 to 3 times per week, depending on the client and artist’s schedule. Paintings completed from photographs are executed at my studio. On average, a painting can take anywhere from 3-6 months to complete, depending on size, subject matter, and scheduling.
