Harland Izatt
Harland Izatt is a Canadian artist from Hamilton, Ontario now 64 years old,
a student of fine art for more than 40 years. Attended O.C.A and A graduate
of Fine arts from Macmaster University but considers himself self taught from
the many hundreds of hours spent in the studio and observing life around him.
Studying the styles and techniques of many masters like Vermere have allowed
him to his own unique style in portraits using oils and a glazing process.
Since retiring form teaching in 2000 he has repeated trips to Bali, Indonesia
where he develops his craft in portrait painting with the influence of
Balinese art and artists. He shows every 2 years from his own studio gallery
called "Gallery 69 East" in Hamilton. This year he has been selected
to show his artwork at "The Biennale" in Florence, Italy an international
juried show involving artists from 72 nations.
"It is my belief that as an artist
I work to seek out the potential that I might achieve by consistent work discipline
and study of human nature. In portrait painting it is essential to know the nature of
the subject well enough to catch that moment that depicts the gesture and character of t
hat individual. I find that this comes with years of observation, study, and skill
development. I believe that the portrait is a way of immortalizing… being passed
down family to family over years unlike photos ever lasting and often with an
accompanied story. In order to do that the quality of the painting is paramount".
