I am fascinated by people. There are certain people in my life who have had an impact on me, either through their sense of independence, their life choices, or their fundamental values. In my paintings, I am exploring my relationship to people that are important to me in my life; people that I believe have something to say. I want to see how much I can capture of them through the act of painting, and what I can convey to the viewer regarding their abstract traits of morality and spirituality through the work.
I have always been interested in looking at the physical world around us, and learning what emotional connection we have in reaction to what we see. Because I find people to be so complex on both a physical and emotional level, I feel they are the most interesting subject to explore. I paint people in a very simple and comfortable state. I like the setting and lighting to be as natural as possible. I want the people to be interacting with me and ultimately the viewer, so the poses are either a fixed gaze, or the body language is such that the viewer feels they are a part of this person's life in that moment. Oil painting produces a luminosity and lusciousness that I find very "human" in nature. After studying the human figure for over 10 years, I have found people hold complex forms of light and colour in their skin, eyes and clothes that isn't necessarily noticeable at first glance. Oil paints are great to blend and create layers of these different visual tones, and act as a fantastic medium for me to produce a form that's full of life. All my paintings are life-size, in order to capture the reality of the subjects' presence as much as possible.
A successful painting for me is one that can generate a "life spark" between the subject painted and the viewer. I am interested when people look at a painting of someone and determine that they are scared, independent, confident or troubled through a pose that is simple and direct. I think people are drawn to figurative work when it triggers an emotional reaction because it reminds us that we are deeper than just the physical. I want people to walk away from the work with a renewed sense of the complexity of humans, and how our personalities are deeper than one single emotion, like "happy" or "sad". I believe people hold personal values and varied interests, and I seek to explore these intangible traits in my paintings.
