Monica Chen
It is my passion to try to capture the essence of the subject.
When the subject's personality and facial characteristics are
successfully transferred onto canvas the portrait comes alive.
But it is the expressions that catch your eye that are
most important to me.
I believe a portrait reflects the history of its time.
I wish people could enjoy seeing my portraits as much as I
enjoy making them.
I was born in Taiwan and studied business and art concurrently.
Though I had an interest and some skills in painting, they lost out to the
business field. As a mother it was my focus on family
and wanting to preserve a record of my children's expressions that led me
into portraiture.
As a self-taught painter I have always worked alone.
It wasn't until January 2004 that I decided to enroll in painting courses
at
Toronto School of Art.
