Susan Makin
Diverse experiences and professional accomplishments in therapeutic and educational fields empower my artistic style and vision. My natural tendency to blend realism with whimsy makes viewers smile. Some larger-than-life images appear quirky, others offer atypical perspectives or form new patterns. Colours are bold, bright, and contrasting, with paint applied carefully (usually oil on canvas). Subjects are magnified from life for greater impact and engagement, all-over patterns being preferred to distinct backgrounds. Initially, circumstances (trauma, loss, and relocation) led me to consider the familiar or meaningful from fresh viewpoints, a theme that's ongoing. Subject –matters usually involve the personally familiar like faces, flowers, food, fruit, or furry friends. Fantasy/abstract pieces, more often than not, stem from my penchant for doodling, and my portraiture has become increasingly canine and animal-focused. Audience responses confirm to me how imagery that’s familiar (comforting, refreshing, or hopeful) for one person can be for many. All my artwork, regardless of focus or style, is depicted in ways that soothe, inspire, amuse, or appetize—often with a heart or two included somewhere. Whether representational, expressive, colorist, whimsical, illustrative, kitsch, or outsider, my by-line is clear: "Not just art, a piece of my heART."
